Your state's tax department
Your W-2 works the same everywhere for federal tax. State income tax is different in every state, so for your state's rates, forms and deadline, go to its official tax department.

Nine states don't tax wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Washington taxes some capital gains, but not wages. If you live in one of these, boxes 15 to 17 on your W-2 may be blank.

Worked in more than one state?
Your W-2 can show a separate line in boxes 15 to 17 for each state. Each state's tax department explains whether you file there, so check the site for every state listed on your W-2.
